Hello. I am a licensed clinical social worker from the US and an adult TCK. Having learned first hand some of the challenges on the field, my background fuels my passion about supporting missionary children and families. With empathy, acceptance, openess, compassion, faith and a listening ear, I walk alongside clients for their healing and health.

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist who joined Tumaini in February 2024 after serving as a physiotherapist with the Karamojong, an unreached people group in northeastern Uganda. This experience of ministry in a remote, cross-cultural setting informs my work as a counsellor. This experience also enabled me to recognize the importance of both preventive and restorative mental health care for missionaries.
I have extensive experience working with both adults and young people, blending warmth, creativity, and expertise to help clients feel seen and understood. My integrative approach emphasises four key elements: the client, the therapeutic relationship, hope, and the therapeutic model. I tailor my approach to each individual’s needs, whether incorporating person-centred, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, or existential therapy. I prioritise building trust and helping clients unpack their stories.
I believe the quality of the relationship between client and therapist is crucial for effective therapy. Therefore, I focus on creating a strong bond through empathy, acceptance, and genuineness. My Christian faith is central to my work, providing me with purpose and a sense of hope. Research shows that having hope and expecting positive change can significantly enhance therapy outcomes. One of my favourite therapeutic tools is the sandtray, along with miniature figures, which I use to help clients uncover and explore deeper emotions. This method offers a creative way to express the subconscious in a safe space.
Therapeutic Modalities:
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Person-centred Therapy
Psychodynamic Therapy
Existential Therapy
Sandtray Therapy

I joined Tumaini in October 2022 as a licensed clinical professional counselor because I have a deep desire to walk alongside missionaries who long to see God work through their brokenness. My specialties include marital counseling, using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and trauma care, as I am trained in EMDR. I’ve also been blessed with intercultural experience that helps me connect with clients from diverse backgrounds.
Whether I’m working with an individual, a couple, or a family, I strive to respond with a sensitivity that honors the health of the relationships and communities each client belongs to. I’m available for sessions four days a week and look forward to being a supportive part of your journey.

Mrs. Sarah Sandoz
I am a social worker with nearly a decade of mental health experience. I moved to Kenya in 2017 and have been able to spend extensive time in South Sudan and parts of North Africa. Through my own personal experience living cross culturally I have seen the need for both preventative care and restorative care for global workers.
My clinical approach is unique to each individual or couple but I believe in gently uncovering the root of the problem in order to create sustainable change for each person I meet. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). I have also done advanced training in complex trauma and dissociation. Additionally, I pull from other modalities when appropriate such as parts work (aspects of Internal Family Systems) and sandtray therapy.
It is my honor to foster, and hold, a safe space for my brave clients who show up to do the hard work of mental health care. I believe that by working together and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can bring forth hope and healing to hard situations.
I am available virtually, and in person in Nairobi, to meet with adults and couples.
